Former Segregationist Org Spends big on Sara Nelson

The Stranger wrote this week that The National Association of Realtors, which was a longtime purveyor of segregation and only bothered to apologize in 2020 for opposing the Fair Housing Act of 1968, just spent $70,000 trying to convince Seattle voters to stump for Sara Nelson.

Their mailer claimed Nelson has “progressive values.”

Only an organization like NAR could think of Nelson as progressive.

NAR claims to be bipartisan, but has a semi-secret second fund they started five years ago that makes it clear they overwhelmingly favor Republicans and Republican policy.

Nelson is not a Republican, but she sure seems to make Republicans happy.

NAR is delighted with Trump’s “big beautiful bill” (that’s the one that cut off Medicaid for millions to cut taxes for the rich). They are also prone to getting into trouble. They recently paid a nearly half billion dollar fine for ripping off consumers, among a long list of other bad things.

Nelson doesn’t seem to mind having them on her side. Their support certainly shouldn’t surprise anyone. The same reactionaries spent big to put people like Bob Kettle, Rob Saka and Maritza Rivera on council.

Those councilmembers’ abysmal approval ratings suggest that—perhaps—NAR’s values are not our values.
